Things to do on Roatan
Date: 13 Feb 2010

The following are suggestions of activities to enjoy while you are visiting Roatan - visit the adventures and diving pages on the site for more information and rates.
Diving
Diving has been Roatan?s main attraction for a long time. Caves and crevices, thousand-foot walls, wrecks, abundant sea life, dolphins, sharks, whale sharks and the largest number of sponges in the Caribbean, makes Roatan, and the Bay Islands, one of the most desirable diving destinations in the world.
Exploring
We suggest that you take a day to explore the island and what it has to offer. There are two ways of doing this: taking an organised island tour or hiring a vehicle for the day and exploring on your own time. TropicalREZ can help with both, visit our adventures and car rental pages for more information and rates.
Beaches
Roatan has beautiful beaches. The beaches from Sandy Bay to West Bay are excellent, with numerous places to stop and relax or have a refreshing island cocktail. Our longest and most deserted beach, Camp Bay, is located on the east end of the island. There is almost nothing to buy out there, so you might consider your trip to Camp Bay a picnic and bring food and drink with you. Another choice is Palmetto Bay Plantation, on the northern side of the island ? the beach is semi-deserted and offers a gorgeous white sandy beach.
Glass Bottom Boat
If you would like to visit the reefs and prefer not to get wet, a trip on the Glass Bottom Boat is the perfect solution. Visit our adventures page for more info.
Canopy Adventure
Roatan's newest and wildest adventure! Take a ride high above the trees for breathtaking views of the sea, the white sandy beach of West Bay and unspoiled jungle. Guests are provided with all necessary equipment, including heavy gloves, for a glide through treetops, landing on 11 different platforms on the West Bay Canopy Tour.
Carambola Gardens
The gardens provide a relaxing stroll through a diverse collection of flowering plants, ferns, spices, fruit trees, hardwood trees and orchids.
Iguana Farm
The owner of this quirky attraction has spent years protecting and raising the over-hunted green iguanas that laze about in the trees around his house in French Key, east of French Harbor. The best time to visit is about 12 noon, at feeding time, as this is when the iguanas are most lively.
Horse back riding
There are a number of places that offer great horseback riding. You have the option of riding up into the hills, or riding along the sand and into the azure water of some of the island's best beaches.
Sailing
No better way than seeing the island, snorkeling its reefs, visiting deserted keys, and spotting dolphins and flying fish. There are a number of really good sailing charters which operate from Roatan island. Charter companies offer island-hopping tours, overnight trips, sunset and dinner trips as well as sailing instruction. Visit our adventures page for more information.
Sea Kayaking
Kayaking companies on Roatan offer a different way to experience the beautiful Roatan coastline. From half-day rentals to one, two or 6-day tours, sea kayaks offer the most adventurous way to get around to the island's best snorkeling spots. Swimming with dolphins
By far the most sought after activity on Roatan. Choose from a Dolphin Encounter and Swim, which allows you to play with the dolphins while standing on shore and while swimming or a Dolphin snorkel or dive, which offers a more intimate experience with these intelligent marine mammals.
Visit the Garifuna culture
The Garifuna community of Punta Gorda is the only true Garifuna community on Roatan. Punta Gorda was actually the first Garifuna settlement in Central America. To commemorate their arrival to Roatan, the Garifunas have a carnival every year on the 12 of April.
Fishing
There are a number of options for fishermen on Roatan. Choose between deep sea trolling or bottom fishing tours (fishing for barracuda, tuna, wahoo, dorado) or fly-fishing tours for bonefish. Visit the adventure page for more information and rates.
Submarine Adventures
The world?s deepest tourist submarine is the newest addition to Roatan?s list of top adventures to pursue while on the islands. You will find more information and rates on our adventure page.
